R.I. Supreme Court Allows Chariho's Lawsuit Against State To Go Forward
The property transfer agreement said the state would not approve “the establishment of any career and technical center in the towns of Charlestown, Hopkinton, Narragansett, Richmond, South Kingstown and Westerly.” Six years later, Chariho filed suit in Superior Court alleging that the education department had breached its contract by approving similar vocational programs at Westerly and Narragansett High Schools. Read more hereChariho which includes schools in Charlestown, Richmond, and Hopkinton had agreed in 2010 to take over a regional career and technical program that had belonged to the state education department. This agreement expressed that the state would not allow any career and technical center in the towns of Charlestown, Hopkinton, Narragansett, Richmond, South Kingstown, and Westerly to be established. After six years, Chariho filed a suit in Superior Court against the education department for breach of contract by approving similar vocational programs at Westerly and Narragansett High Schools. There was however a hearing to dismiss the complaint in March 2017 wherein the state argued that the agreement distinguished between a "center" for career and technical education and a program.
Misquamicut in Westerly, RI
Misquamicut is known as a fire district in southern Washington County, Rhode Island. It is part of the town of Westerly. The district was once known as Pleasant View which was later changed to Misquamicut in 1928. The word Misquamicut originated from the Narragansett language or in another Algonquian language closely related to the former which literally means At the Place of the Red Fish or At the Salmon Place. The district suffered a series of devastating hurricanes that caused tremendous disaster in the area. The typhoon destroyed hotels, beach houses, hotels, and other structures in 1938, 1944, and 1954.
